For most filter cups, whether the filter paper fits well is a very important matter. Because the folding of filter paper is very simple, people usually don’t pay too much attention to it. But precisely because it is too simple, it is easy to overlook its importance. Under normal circumstances, a wood pulp conical filter paper has a high fit with the conical filter cup after folding. Basically, it doesn’t need to be moistened with water, it already fits snugly with the filter cup. But if we find that one side of the filter paper cannot fit into the filter cup when we insert it into the filter cup, it is highly likely that it is not folded properly, which is why this situation occurs (unless the filter cup is of a type like ceramic that cannot be industrialized for mass production). How to fold filter paper correctly?
Below is a bleached wood pulp conical filter paper, and it can be seen that there is a suture line on one side of the filter paper.
The first step we need to take when folding conical filter paper is to fold it according to the suture line. So, let’s fold it first.
After folding, you can use your fingers to smooth and press to reinforce the shape.
Then open the filter paper.
Then fold it in half and attach it to the joint on both sides.
After fitting, the focus has come! We use the method of pressing the crease line just now to press this suture line. This action is very important, as long as it is done well, there is a high probability that there will be no channel in the future, which can fit more perfectly. The pressing position is from beginning to end, first pulling and then smoothing.
At this point, the folding of the filter paper is basically completed. Next, we will attach the filter paper. Firstly, we spread the filter paper open and put it into the filter cup.
It can be seen that the filter paper has almost perfectly adhered to the filter cup before it has been wetted. But it’s not enough. To ensure perfection, we need to use two fingers to hold down the two crease lines on the filter paper. Gently press down to ensure that the filter paper has fully touched the bottom.
After confirmation, we can pour water from bottom to top to wet the filter paper. Basically, the filter paper has already perfectly adhered to the filter cup.
But this method can only be used for some filter papers, such as those made of special materials such as non-woven fabric, which need to be moistened with hot water to make them adhere.
If we don’t want to wet the filter paper, for example, when making iced coffee, we can fold it and place it in the filter cup. Then, we can use the same pressing method to press the filter paper, pour coffee powder into it, and use the weight of the coffee powder to make the filter paper stick to the filter cup. This way, there will be no chance for the filter paper to warp during the brewing process.
